(Memphis, TN) Derek Rende defeated Joe David on the first playoff hole to capture the 2008 Tennessee Amateur Championship at Ridgeway Country Club in Memphis. This is Rende's second state title as he also captured the 2007 SunTrust State Open Championship.
Rende, who is from Soddy Daisy, began the day with a three-shot lead over defending champion, Bobby Hudson (Memphis) and a four-shot lead over Madison's Joe David, but Joe David made a huge charge on the front nine shooting a four-under par 31 and moving into a tie with Rende for the lead after another birdie at the par-5 11th hole. Rende and David battled throughout the back nine and ultimately finished the 72-hole event tied at 270 (14 under par).
Both players then returned to the 18th tee for the first playoff hole. Rende hit his drive into the left part of the fairway while David hit his drive to the right side of the par-5 finishing hole. Both players missed the putting green on the second shots. Rende, who played first, hit his pitch shot to about 18 inches. Joe David then hit his pitch to about four feet. David was next to play and his birdie putt just missed. Rende then sank his birdie putt to claim the 93rd Tennessee Amateur Championship.
