Kelvin Burgin's lucky number is three as he three-peats at 40th Annual TPGA Section Championship
(Old Hickory, TN) Head Professional, Kelvin Burgin (Crossville) from the Bear Trace at Cumberland Mountain started the third and final round two shots back of the second round leader Steve Munson (Chuckey - Graysburg Hills). Burgin's -3 under par round of 68 was enough to claim his third title, in as many years, by two strokes. The pair of PGA Professionals shared the leaderboard for most of the day, but Burgin's birdie from the trees on #16 gave him a three shot lead where he pared the two remaining holes. Burgin took home the first place check of $6,500 and also earned a spot in the 2009 Stanford St. Jude Championship (PGA TOUR). Burgin joins Gibby Gilbert (Hixson) and Bert Weaver as the only other two Tennessee Section PGA Professionals to successfully defend their title two consecutive years.
Loneome Pine's Chris Stacy fought his way to the leaderboard with a -4 under par round of 67 to finish in a tie for third place with Keith Burdette (Chattanooga - Bear Trace at Harrions Bay) and fellow state employee Mark Houser (Kingsport - TN Golf Trail at Warriors Path).
In all, 60 PGA Professionals competed in the Championship which was hosted by the 6,600 yard par 71 Old Hickory Country Club. Tennessee PGA professionals came as far as Olive Branch, MS and Big Stone Gap, VA to compete in the 40th Annual Championship of the Tennessee Section, an affiliate of the PGA of America.
