The First Tee of Nashville Retains the Challenge Cup in 2009 Versus The First Tee of Memphis
The Challenge Cup is an annual "Ryder Cup format" event that pits The First Tee of Nashville against The First Tee of Memphis. There were nine holes of individual Match Play On Saturday October 24, 2009 at VinnyLinks Golf Course. featuring 11 matches. At the end of the first day, the competition was close, with Nashville leading 6 1/2 to 4 1/2.
Upon completion of singles matches, the teams had time to mingle and enjoy pizza and sodas. The participants were then given a life skills exercise. The team members had to use STAR (Stop, Think, Anticipate, and Respond) and CARE (Communicate, Actively Listen, Review Options, and End with a Win-win situation) to choose their teams for the following day. Would it be best to put the stronger players on the same team? Would it be best to put a strong driver with a strong short game player? And how about personalities...which person would play best with whom? All questions that many Ryder Cup and President's Cup captains have had to ask and answer.
On Sunday October 25, 2009, team matches were held at Ted Rhodes Golf Course. The front nine format was Best Ball. Scorecards were turned in upon completion of the front nine, with five matches on the line Nashville lead 4 to 1. The back nine format was Alternate Shot which Nashville won 4-1, withy three matches going to the last hole.
The final score of the Challenge Cup was 15 to 6 in favor of The First Tee of Nashville, with the chapter retaining the cup for another year. See below for full results.
